At Columbia, we take the spiritual formation of our students seriously. The Office of Student Affairs & Community Life works to help students cultivate lifelong spiritual practices to sustain and support them in ministry.
Students are here, primarily, to be educated and prepare for ministry. Much of this education takes place in the classroom. In addition to classroom and field experience, students are nurtured, challenged, and ultimately formed by mentoring relationships, engagement in community life, participation in community worship, and other spiritual disciplines and experiences.
OSACL Spiritual Formation Events
Spiritual formation events will resume in the fall 2018 semester. Explore the Community Calendar for other upcoming events.
Spiritual Direction Subsidy
In a confidential, supportive, and nonjudgmental setting, you can explore your spiritual journey, discern God's will in the decisions you face, learn new spiritual disciplines and ways to pray, deepen your faith, hope, and sense of life purpose. Meetings are monthly. The Spirituality Program subsidizes Spiritual Direction for full time basic degree students (M.Div., M.A.P.T., Dual Degree, and M.A.T.S.).
Opportunities for both individual and group spiritual direction are available.
Columbia’s labyrinth, a path of prayer for walking meditation, is a hand-painted canvas floor cloth which is installed at various times during the year in Harrington Center Chapel. When Center for Lifelong Learning classes are not meeting in the Chapel, community members are invited to enter this sacred path. Our labyrinth is based on the design of one laid in floor tiles of the cathedral in Chartres, France.
During the 2018 - 2019 academic year, the labyrinth will be available on the following dates:
July 27 - 28, 2018
October 5 - 6 , 2018
